Semoulin Packaging has positioned itself for years as a leader in the packaging sector in Belgium and beyond.
At the Thulin facilities, on the company’s historic site, a hundred employees strive to offer you packaging solutions that are both practical and eco-friendly.
While plastic remains ubiquitous in the packaging industry, the teams at Semoulin Packaging offer increasingly green solutions to combat the proliferation of single-use materials.
Discover laminating, a process that transforms simple sheets of paper into truly robust packaging.
How does laminating work in printing?
The laminating method involves assembling multiple layers of paper to create a material that is both more resistant and thicker.
This technique offers numerous advantages:
- Achieving more robust packaging
- Maintaining a high-quality printing surface
- Assembling different types of materials
- Creating windows directly in the packaging to meet marketing needs
The laminating phase of paper elements occurs right after the flexographic printing process, which we discussed in a previous article.
Indeed, after being printed with speed and precision, the paper roll destined to become packaging passes through a laminating machine.
A Way to Make Paper Even More Durable
Obviously, depending on the desired outcome, the paper weight and the number of layers will vary. But whether it’s a flour bag, a pasta pouch, or a container for charcoal, laminating is an effective solution to achieve consistently reliable results.
Thanks to such technical expertise, it is possible to replace traditionally durable plastic containers with a more sustainable solution!
Laminating: Both an Ecological and Marketing Method
At Semoulin Packaging, laminating is also considered from a commercial perspective. It’s possible to create a window that allows consumers to see the finished product.
The cutting of this visual space is very important in terms of marketing. Indeed, its presence offers buyers a direct view of the product they are about to choose. There’s nothing better to validate an impulse purchase than being sure of what’s inside the package!
How Does This Window Appear on Your Packaging?
Depending on the requirements, the window may be made from a simple sheet of plastic. However, what is more advocated by the employees of Semoulin Packaging is a natural fiber mesh. This biodegradable mesh is then glued in the machine and added along the roll to allow visibility without the risk of loss.
Aiming for Sustainability in All Components: Water-Based Adhesive
Of course, assembling sheets of paper requires the use of an adhesive product. To stay true to the ecological vision that has always driven the company, the adhesive material is guaranteed to be solvent-free!
Water-based adhesive is an ideal solution for creating packaging safely: for both consumers and workers.
Toxic solvents should no longer have a place in our environment when other solutions exist. That’s why at Semoulin Packaging, the decision was made to renounce solvents, as they can have harmful consequences on the environment and individuals.
The Innovative Extra?
On this already impressive machine, all windows are created from a unique piece entirely designed by Semoulin’s teams. As production manager Mathieu explains:
“We needed tailor-made solutions for our clients… so we made sure to provide them! That’s also the identity of Semoulin: technical know-how and a genuine desire to innovate to guarantee the ideal product.”
With Laminating, Make Sustainable Choices!
To reduce the carbon footprint of your packaging, it is necessary to consider all its components.
The technical and production teams at Semoulin Packaging offer you more environmentally friendly packaging solutions while still meeting the inherent needs of your product.
